Hank Johnson Suffers from Hepatitis C
(WSB Radio) U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson tells the Atlanta Journal Constitution he has chronic hepatitis C. He has shed 30 pounds in the past year. He tells the AJC he was officially declared free of the virus in January, but it has ravaged his liver, damaged his thyroid and caused other health problems, including depression, for which he's also being treated. In the U-S an estimated 3. 2 million people have chronic hepatitis C according the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. Hepatitis C is chronic when the body can't get rid of the virus. Without treatment, chronic hepatitis C can cause scarring of the liver, liver cancer; and liver failure.
Hepatitis C is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. Most people infected with the hepatitis C virus have no symptoms. In fact, most people don't know they have the hepatitis C infection until liver damage shows up, decades later, during routine medical tests. Hepatitis C is passed through contact with contaminated blood.
